We've all heard, from almost everywhere, “ You need to limit your daily sodium intake”. You  may wonder why this is important and how do you limit your sodium?  Below are 5 tips to get you moving in the right direction! First lets look at why you want to limit your sodium intake. It is important to watch out for our sodium levels, because excess sodium can change the water balance in your cells and tissues. If this change occurs constantly, extra stress will be put onto your body systemsà as a result of this stress your kidneys will have to put in extra effort to maintain the proper sodium levels in your body. Even your vessels will be affected by the increased amount of sodium. In the long run, excessive amounts of sodium in your diet may lead to high blood pressure, which will cause damage to your heart and kidneys.  This is why you should keep your sodium intakes within the recommended daily amounts. The current daily recommendation for sodium is 2,300 milligrams (mg)—equivalent to about 1 teaspoon of table salt. This recommended amount does not only account for the extra salt that you add to your foods, it also includes all the salt that is already in your foods.  Here are some ways you can try to limit sodium in your diet:

    1. Fresh is best! Whole and unprocessed foods are naturally lower in sodium. So center your grocery list around FRESH vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean proteins.
    2. When cooking, avoid adding salt, use no added salt herbs and spices for flavoring, such as; garlic, onions, ginger, parsley, thyme—they will bring a lot of flavor to your dishes!
    3. Put your nutrition facts label reading skills to the test. Pay attention to the sodium content between different versions and different brands of the same foods. You will be surprised at the differences you will find.
